In the twenty years following 1882, twenty-five thousand people left the unbearable conditions in Russia, Poland and Romania and went to Palestine – “The First Aliyah.” Even so, it constituted only a fraction of those who emigrated – one million went to the United States alone. (Y. Ben-Ami)
