IRGUN TO THE U.N. COMMITTEE, SPRING 1947 (on Statehood)

WE (the Irgun) PRESSED THEM (the Committee) TO URGE THE CREATION OF A JEWISH STATE IN THE WHOLE OF THE COUNTRY.

“WE WOULD WILLINGLY DO IT” said Granados “BUT WE CANNOT BE MORE EXTREME THAN THE JEWISH AGENCY.  THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE SEE THE JEWISH AGENCY PROPOSAL FOR PARTITION AS A COMPROMISE BETWEEN YOUR DEMANDS AND THOSE OF THE ARABS.  THERE IS NO CHANCE OF A DECISION TO GIVE MORE THAN THE OFFICIAL JEWISH REPRESENTATIVES DEMAND.”

“At least” we replied “you can issue a minority report for a Jewish State in the undivided country.  This will make clear that partition far from being a ‘concession’ to the Jews is in fact a compromise proposal, and a compromise that creates more problems than it solves.  Such a report could be of great historic importance.”
