LECHI DEDICATION TO JERUSALEM
In the words of Eliezer Ben-Ami
29 November 1947: The United Nations voted on a “partitioned” State of Israel with Jerusalem an international city, which Britain planned to later give to the Arabs.
On 15 May 1948 the LECHI decided to keep a fighting unit in Jerusalem, to fight for the freedom of Jerusalem, to not accept the UN declaration.
LECHI said:
“Jerusalem was always Jewish and she will stay Jewish forever ...
And we will fight for it ...”
And all the LECHI agreed to fight to free Jerusalem!
Even the IZL decided to continue fighting in Jerusalem.
Even the Haganah decided to continue to fight in Jerusalem.
All failed because the Arab Legion of seven Arab countries invaded Palestine.
The Arabs did not accept Partition.
The Egyptians came across the Sinai ... into Gaza and Hebron ...
The Saudis and Jordanians moved across the Negev and West Bank and into Jerusalem ...
The Syrians and Lebanese came across the north into Golan.
The Jews succeeded to hold off as much as they could (with few munitions and cease-fires).
At Cyprus meetings were held to make peace.
FOR LECHI ... THE BIGGEST UNIT IN JERUSALEM ...
THIS WAS A VERY PERSONAL FIGHT.
